Wheeler’s Yard must have, or soon to have, one of the most photographed facades of a cafe ever. It also must be one of the most spacious cafe in Singapore. Even the al fresco area, and the atas bike shop (or the bike atelier as it is called atas-ly), is sheltered by the hanger-like warehouse. It is really kid-friendly as well with all that space to run around. The overall experience with the space is very nice. And, that is the key about this cafe that will make me go back again.
I went there on a Saturday and, maybe because of the space, it was not crowded at all. People were really relaxed. I get this strange feeling that they will be perfectly fine if you fell asleep midway through your brunch. Food selection isn’t great, but that is good because, at least, they are of an adequate level. Qin, my usual weekend kaki, loved her Big Breakfast while I was okay with my Bread Bowl. Coffee, I am happy to report, is slightly above average. I had an espresso, and enjoyed it. It was really a casual affair, and I liked it.
People with cars mourned about the lack of parking, but bicycle riders won’t have the same complain as it has plenty of racks for you to lock your two-wheelers. Although I was pretty lucky to get a spot inside the compound on the second try (both Lorong and Jalan Ampas are a one-way street, so I had to make a u-turn out on Balestier Road), I might want to try parking at the HDB estate out on Jalan Rajah across the Whampoa River and enter through the back gate of the cafe next time.

P.S. To Wheeler’s Yard; Any chance of making the place pet-friendly?
